Director Mihalis Kakogiannis was lucky to find collaborators as Mikis Theodorakis (composer brilliant soundtrack) and Walter Lassally (who filmed poorly all the territory where there is most of the action). The movie is dominated entirely by Zorba for which Anthony Quinn was the perfect choice. This seems to be the best ever played by Anthony Quinn. Zorba's exuberance, the ability of character to see only the life cloudless and optimistic attitude to transfer to others, combined with the metaphor of dance on the deserted beach make this film a masterpiece. Also actors like Alan Bates and Irene Papas performing roles with professionalism, playing strong characters with great authenticity.
